Merchant Navy-Sonali Banerjee
First woman marine engineer, she graduated from the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) at Taratala in 1999. Sonali successfully took the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) entrance test and enrolled for the marine engineering course in 1995. even befre she passed from the institute, she had a job in hand with Exxon-Mobil Oil Tankers. With that India joined the ranks of select Scandinavian, European and American countries which have women merchant navy officers on board ships for high seas. says principal officer and registrar of Indian ships in Kolkata.

Sonali has had to struggle all the way. She always knew it would be tough, having to prove that she was capable and not privileged to be there because she was a woman. She says that it was her determination and perseverance that got her through.

Her success has attracted the attention of many other aspiring girls and paved the way for them into an all men domain (till some time back) called Merchant Navy.
