The garbage is an unwanted or undesired material or substance. It is also referred to as rubbish, trash, waste, or junk depending upon the type of material.
The useless and unwanted materials discarded by humans are called wastes. They can be biodegradable or non biodegradable.
The biodegradable wastes can be decomposed by the microorganisms. This waste originates from plant and animal sources e.g., dead and decaying remains of plants and animals, faecal remains etc.
The non-biodegradable wastes do not break down into simple and harmless products by natural agents such as fungi, bacteria etc. example metallic oxides, DDT, lead, mercury, radioactive wastes etc
Depending upon the source of generation, the wastes can be of various types’ domestic waste, industrial waste, commercial waste, biomedical waste, agriculture waste etc.
The landfill is an area where the garbage collected from a city or town is dumped.
The composting is a process in which plant waste, animal waste and kitchen waste is converted into manure. The vermicomposting is a method of preparing compost from kitchen waste with the help of Red worms. Red worm is a kind of earthworm. They do not have teeth. They have a structure called ‘gizzard’, which helps them in grinding of food.
The recycling is the method of reprocessing the materials into new products. The paper recycling is the process of recovering waste paper and remaking them into new paper products.
The plastic cannot be converted into less harmful substances by composting. Only some types of plastics can be recycled. The use of plastic do not create so much problem but the problems arise when we use plastics excessively and are ignorant about ways of disposing their waste. So, we should minimize the use of plastics.
The government has also laid down guidelines for recycling of plastics.
