Operating System - Functions
Software can be broadly classified into three categories: System Software, Application Software and Firmware. System Software is a set of one or more programs, designed to control the operation of a computer system. Application software is a set of one or more programs, designed to carry out operations for a specified application. Firmware is the combination of software and hardware. The various functions of operating system are: Program execution, handling input / output operation, manipulation of file system, error detection and handling, resource allocation, accounting, information and resource protection and maintaining the internal time clock.
Operating system supervises the various resources of computer. Management function is categorized into two ways: hardware management and software management. Hardware management is further categorised into processor management, memory management and I/O management. Software management is further categorised into File management, Software tools management and Data Security. Operating system is designed to manage the various resources and overall operations of a computer system. Operating System can be classified into two categories: Single User Operating System and Multi User Operating System. A single user operating system has a single CPU and one set of /O devices. Multi User operating system allows more than one user and each user works on a different set of programs and data.
