GirlForce – Unsripted and Unstoppable

Girl Child

Today is the International Day of the Girl Child. Why do we need a day dedicated to young girls, you ask? The reasons are many! Let’s brainstorm a few –

  • High incidence of female foeticide (illegal in most parts of the world).
  • Discriminatory practices from very young age to the old
  • Educational inequality and high drop out rates
  • Confinement within gender defined roles
  • Proneness to violence both inside and outside the home
  • Exploitation in various manners
  • Limited participation in public spaces
  • Lack of information and understanding around sanitary practices
  • Unequal start setting up the stage for an unequal future

…and depending upon how deep in thought you are, this list can go on! It is hence, that 11th October was designated as International Day of the Girl Child. It was necessary that more awareness be created around the discriminatory practices faced by girls right from their infant-hood.

The day was originally conceptualized by an international NGO, named Plan International. They launched a campaign called ‘Because I am a Girl’ to celebrate the spirit of young women, and endeavoured to raise awareness regarding gender-based issues globally. Their efforts were then married with the United Nations, and with the passing of a resolution, the first such day was celebrated on 11thOctober, 2012. A small step towards helping girls take flight.

When you think about it, what is the first thing which comes to the mind when you look for plausible solutions to the skewed gender dynamics across the globe? Education! And this is a cause we hold most dear too. Take a look at the Extramarks logo – our philosophy and beliefs speak out from there itself. The advantage with building a technology platform to spread the light of education from is that it is democratic, unbiased and not limiting in any manner. While we understand that the joyous flight of learning for girls is hindered by several socio-economic issues, we are devoted to making learning accessible and opening up all kinds of career paths for girls.

The most wonderful thing about this year’s celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child is the theme – GirlForce – Unscripted and Unstoppable. It is a well thought and well-articulated theme which opens up the stage to discuss possibilities for girls. It calls out for a feisty and fiery encouragement of girls to find their innate power, voice and hustle forward without any conditions and fears.

We hope our children grow up in a world which is more equal, just and nurturing for all, and for that, creating equal opportunities for empowerment of girls is going to be an important step. This day, and every other day of the year, girl force should be, unscripted and unstoppable!
