International Organisations

International Organization helps with matters of war and peace. It is a platform for generating new ideas. It helps the nation to cooperate and have more confidence on the global issues like – global warming, eradication of diseases etc. The UN was founded as a successor to the League of Nations. The charter of the UN, signed in San Francisco on 26 June 1945, defined six main organs of the new world body, each with specific tasks and functions. The General Assembly composed of representatives of all member states. The Security Council, a 15-member body, has primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. There are five permanent members of the Security Council. The remaining Security Council members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is assigned the task of organizing the UN's work on economic and social matters and the promotion of human rights. The Trusteeship Council was originally composed of member nations administering trust territories. The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the UN. The Secretariat is the administrative arm of the organization. It is headed by a Secretary-General. Reform of structures and processes In 1992 UN General Assembly adopted a resolution. The resolution reflected three main complaints. Security Council no longer represents contemporary political realities. Its decisions reflect only western values and interests and dominated by few powers. It lacks equitable representation. The member-heads decided that the following steps should be taken to make the UN more effective. Creation of Peace building Commission. Establish Human Rights Council (functional since 2006). Achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Create Democracy Fund. Wind up trusteeship council. Condemnation of terrorism in all its forms. India has supported the restructuring of UN. Any plan for restructuring of Security Council should be broad-based having more developing countries in it. In Unipolar World the power of US cannot be easily checked. Its military and economic power allows it to ignore the UN. Within the UN the influence of the US is considerable. Technology promises to increase planetary interdependence and it is hard to imagine seven billion people living without UN.
