Antonyms

Antonyms help in improving writing and vocabulary skills. They play an important role in literature and linguistics as they help in understanding and recognizing the literature devices used by the author in his/ her writing. They also improve one’s writing skills.

An antonym is a word which is opposite in meaning to another word. For instance, the antonym of ‘good’ is ‘bad.’ There are some more antonyms of the word ‘good’ such as, ‘corrupt,’ ‘evil,’ ‘malicious,’ ‘wicked,’ ‘terrible.’ The learner can use different words to write effectively.

There are a few such antonyms that offer no middle grounds. With complementary antonyms, each word has only one antonym. For example: yes – no, off – on. The reason is the relationship between the two words. One can also form antonyms by adding prefixes in some cases. For example, appear becomes disappear, attentive becomes inattentive, fortunate become unfortunate, legal becomes illegal, and so on. Many times, we can understand a word better if we take a look at its antonym or opposite meaning; therefore, we need to be judicious while using these in our communication.
