Writing a good letter is an art. In today’s world of great inventions and technology, letters have somehow become redundant but still they act as a strong medium of communication. Letters speak volumes about a person .So one must take utmost care ensuring that the language used in any letter is appropriate for the occasion for which it is being written.
Formal letter writing is an important means of communication. The purpose of writing a formal letter is to make a complaint, request something or make an enquiry. These are also known as business letters and include letters to government officials and letters to editors. The tone of this letter is usually polite, formal, impersonal and to the point. When writing a formal or business letter, presentation style and format is the key to making a good first impression.
There are a number of conventions that should be adhered to and it is important that the overall structure is as clear and concise as possible and that you avoid the use of informal language. Do remember that you should be polite even if you’re complaining. And always remember that letters should take seconds rather than minutes to read.
