Force and Pressure

Force is a push or pull applied on an object. Motion imparted to objects is due to action of force. A force applied, produces interaction between the two bodies. The net force on a body depends on the magnitude and direction. A force applied on an object may bring the change in state of the object and even can changes its shape.

There are two types of forces: Contact forces and non – contact forces. The contact between the bodies is necessary in case of contact forces. In case of non-contact forces, a direct contact between the interacting bodies is not necessary.

Force exerts pressure. The force acting on a unit area of a surface is called pressure. Pressure exerted by solids is the pressure exerted when a solid body is in contact with some other surface. The liquids and gases exert pressure on the walls of their containers. The pressure exerted by air around us is called atmospheric pressure.
