Word Formation-Primary Derivatives
Primary derivatives are words that can be formed by making some changes to the spelling of a simple word. Knowledge of derivatives is extremely important to develop an effective vocabulary. These derivatives help us improve our written and oral communication skills.
There are different ways in which we may change the spelling of a word and form primary derivatives using different parts of speech. We may form nouns from verbs (example: amuse becomes amusement), nouns from adjectives (example: abundant becomes abundance) etc. Also, we may form verbs from nouns (example: frost becomes freeze), verbs from adjectives (example: deep becomes deepen) etc.
Derivatives form an essential part of a student’s vocabulary and enhance their day-to-day communication. These derivatives form the base for the development of a productive language by enhancing one’s ability to use the appropriate form of a word in a given sentence.
