The Queen’s baton entered India through Wagah Border on Friday. Write a newspaper report on this historic occasion.

    Marks:10
    Answer:

    Queen’s baton reaches India

Amritsar: India, the 2010 Commonwealth Games host, received the Queen’s baton from its neighbouring country Pakistan on Friday. The crossing of the baton through the Wagah border happened amid a colourful ceremony organised by two media groups, The Jang and The Times of India. The ceremony was aptly titled "Peace Through Sports".

The baton exchanged hands at the border when Indian Olympic Association chairman Suresh Kalmadi received it from his Pakistani counterpart. Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, who was the chief guest, was invited to the Indian ceremony which had renowned Pakistani singer Rahet Fateh Ali Khan performing for the audience. The Pakistani governor later remarked that sports and cultural activities could ease the tensions between the two nations. Pakistani cricket legend Zaheer Abbas was full of adulation for the organisers of the event.

The baton has entered India exactly 100 days before the games begin. It will now traverse the length and breadth of the country covering every state and union territory before reaching the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium prior to the opening ceremony on October 3. The Queen’s baton commenced its journey at the Buckingham Palace in London on October 29, 2009. It travelled through 71 countries that were earlier ruled over by the British.

    Answer:

Air India Plane Crashes At Mangalore Airport

Mangalore: A horrific accident took place at Bajpe Airport today when an Air India plane arriving from Dubai overshot the runway, crashed and soon caught fire. Out of the 166 passengers on board, only seven have survived. The survivors have been shifted to a local hospital for treatment.

Flight IX-812 fell into the valley adjacent to the airport after it rammed into the boundary wall. The runway at the Mangalore airport is situated on a hillock. Although the runway strip is built on a flat piece of land, its ends slide downwards. Pilots, therefore, have to extremely cautious as even a small error can cause a huge tragedy.

The rescue workers have recovered around 100 charred bodies from the accident site where the flames have been extinguished. The fatal accident happened at 6:35 a.m. The deceased passengers basically consist of Keralites who worked in Dubai. Rescue operations are on and so is the search for the ballot box which will help clarify the cause of the air crash.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced compensations worth Rs. 2,00,000 for the families of those killed and Rs. 50,000 for the injured from the PM’s National Relief Fund. Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has already reached the accident site.

Delhi University reopened after the summer vacations. Write a newspaper report on the interaction between freshers and seniors on the first day of college.

    Marks:10
    Answer:

Delhi University Reopens On A New Date

Instead of reopening on 16 July which is the norm, Delhi University reopened on 21 July. This had never happened in the last 30 years. The delay was caused by the introduction of the semester system. Nevertheless, the first day had a lot to offer.

Thousands of freshers anxiously entered their college gates to embark on a new journey in life. The fear of ragging, however, was mitigated by the strong presence of police personnel. Most of the colleges conducted their orientation programmes. Then began the interaction between the seniors and the freshers which is always the most exciting part of the first day of college. The seniors refrained from doing something objectionable. They just asked the newcomers to give their introduction and made them enact a few gags. The freshers soon found themselves at ease.

The students of Delhi University are known for their strong fashion statement. Both the campuses, i.e., north as well as south, looked vibrant as throngs of students appeared in bright outfits and dark shades. Some grabbed more eyeballs with their unique hairdos and heavy accessories. To sum up, the university reopened on a perfect note with no reports of any untoward incident.

Write a newspaper report on the inauguration of the newly- constructed terminal at the IGI airport in New Delhi.

    Marks:10
    Answer:

    World-Class Terminal Inaugurated

New Delhi: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the deluxe new terminal at the IGI airport on Monday. With this, New Delhi’s airport has now become world-class and can very well compete with those in Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong.

The mammoth terminal has been built at a cost of $2.8 billion. Those who executed this dream project worked frantically day and night for its timely completion. The new terminal can handle 35 million passengers in a year and it will double the airport’s current capacity. Its features include 168 check-in counters, 48 immigration desks, 50 emigration desks, 78 aerobridges etc. Apart from the aerobridges, there are passageways connecting the boarding area directly to the aircraft. These are meant to provide a truly exotic experience to the air passengers.

The other terminal T-2 pales in comparison as it has just 10 aerobridges and one escalator. T-3 in fact has the highest number of aerobridges at a single terminal. It also boasts of a multi-level parking that can accommodate up to 4300 vehicles and there is a hotel comprising 60 rooms for the passengers. In all probability, New Delhi will now become a regional transport hub.
