  • Fishing is one of the oldest occupations in the world. Earlier, it was a part of the subsistence economy but later it became a profitable profession. Sometimes, it is also practiced as a means of recreation. There are various types of fish in oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and ponds. Fish forms an important part of diet for many people in the world.
  • Fishing in Japan is a big industry. There are many big corporations with modernised ships and equipments involved in fishing.
  • Inshore fishing is done near the coast in small boats, while deep sea fishing is done in deep waters away from the coast.
  • Fish farming is a notable feature of Japan’s fishing industry. Rice fields and ponds are used as fish breeding grounds.
  • Bangladesh has a strategic location with respect to fishing. It has a vast continental shelf and numerous islands, which provide ideal conditions for fishing. Hilsa, also known as ilish is the national fish of Bangladesh.
  • An anadromous fish is born in fresh water, but spends most of its life in the sea and returns to fresh water to spawn. Hilsa is an anadromous fish.
  • There are various fishing methods employed to catch fish. Some of them are drifting, trawling, seining, and lining. Purse and haul seine are the common types of seine used.
  • There are various types of fishing. Some of them are:
    1. Pelagic Fishing
    2. Demersal Fishing
    3. Inshore Fishing, and
    4. Freshwater Fishing
  • There are various factors that contribute to the growth of fish in certain areas of the world. These areas, where we can find fish in large quantities are called fishing grounds. Plankton is the main food for marine fish. It is a collective term for millions of micro-organisms. The meeting of warm and cold ocean currents provides best conditions for the growth of planktons.
  • Indented coast is more suitable for fishing than straight coast. Sheltered inlets and estuaries make ideal sites for fishing ports.
  • Many parts of the world are already facing a great decline in fish catch. Fish conservation will have to be practised at the global level.
