• Measurement is the comparison of an unknown quantity with a known quantity. The known quantity is called unit of measurement.
  • The result of a measurement is expressed in two parts: number of times the unit is used to measure the object and the unit of the measurement.

  • Specific units of measurement were needed which could be uniformly used all over the world. Such a unit is called standard unit.
  • There are many systems of units, but the most popular of them are CGS system, FPS system, MKS system and SI system of units.
  • In MKS system, length is measured in metres, mass in kilogram and time in seconds.
  • In CGS system of units, length is measured in centimeter, mass in grams and time in seconds.
  • In FPS system of units, length is measured in foot, mass in pound and time in seconds.
  • The SI system is the most widely used system of units. It has a French origin and it stands for Systeme international d unitey, which means International system of units.
  • It is the modern form of the metric system and is the world's most widely used system of measurement. A few guidelines have to be followed to write units and their symbols.
