Fishery, Piggery, Goat And Sheep Rearing
Increasing human population has led to the increase in demand of food. To meet the growing demand of food, more and more animals such as cow, sheep, hen, pig, goat, and fish are reared through animal husbandry.
Animal husbandry is a common method for breeding and raising livestock in order to receive various essential products or for their use as domestic animals. Sericulture, apiculture, fishery, poultry and livestock farming are few scientific fields of animal husbandry.
Fishery is an extended branch of animal husbandry. Some fish are freshwater, while some are marine. In fish farming, fish are produced on large scale as they are good sources of protein, vitamin A, vitamin D and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fish farming includes two major steps: first is breeding and egg collection and the second is hatching and rearing of fish.To meet the high demand of a growing population, a method of induced breeding is used.Hatching and rearing is different for different fish. This is affected by time period, chemical composition of water, size of pond or incubator and type of fish. Fish culture is of two types; namely monoculture and polyculture. The two methods of fishing are traditional method and modern method. There are three types of pond generally made for rearing of fish, namely, nursery pond, rearing pond and stocking pond.
Designing and maintenance of fish pond is important for fish culture. Precautionary measures should be taken at pre-stocking and post-stocking while designing fish pond.
Fish may suffer from infectious diseases caused by bacteria, fungus, virus, protozoa, tapeworm and liverfluke. They may also suffer fromdisease caused by nutritional deficiency or low oxygen levels such as ammonia poisoning.
Rearing of pigs for meat and other purposes is termed as piggery. They are the most economical meat producers. Pig shelter is made of wood and bamboo. It should be kept clean and dry. Indigenous breeds of pigs are Desi and Ghori. Exotic breeds of cow are Yorkshire, Berkshire and Land Race.
Fats obtained from pig are used for cooking, lubricating, making soaps and candles and greasing purposes.
Goat and sheep are reared for wool, meat, milk, etc.some breeds of goat aregaddi goat, marwari goat and pashmina goat.
They survive in harsh conditions and require very less care; however, they may suffer from viral or bacterial diseases therefore, proper care should be taken.
