Experiments on Respiration

Respiration is the chemical process which involves oxidation of glucose to release energy required for carrying out various life processes.

It is of two types: aerobic and anaerobic.

Photosynthes is is the physico-chemical process by which green plants synthesise their own food (glucose) with the help of sunlight, carbon dioxide and water.

Respiration is a catabolic process in which carbohydrates are broken down, whereas photosynthesis is an anabolic process in which carbohydrates are formed.

Aerobic respiration in germinating seeds can be demonstrated by the level of mercury in the respiroscope, which rises to one-fifth of its total volume because one-fifth of the oxygen is used by these seeds for respiration.

Anaerobic respiration in germinating seeds can be demonstrated by the level of mercury, which falls due to the emanation of carbon dioxide in the test tube containing germinating seeds, however, if the seeds are boiled, mercury level remains unchanged.

Necessity of oxygen for respiration can be demonstrated when seeds show proper germination in the availability of oxygen, however, when oxygen is absorbed by pyrogallate of potash solution, seeds do not germinate successfully.

Production of carbon dioxideduring respiration in germinating seeds can be demonstrated when this gas turns lime water milky.

Production of carbon dioxideduring respiration in green plants can also be demonstrated when this gas turns lime water milky.

Evolution of heat during respiration can be demonstrated by observing an increase in the temperature reading of thermometer during the respiration of germinating seeds.
