Respiratory Tests

Respiration is a chemical process of breaking down or oxidation of food i.e. glucose, in order to release energy for carrying out various life processes.

Various experiments are conducted to evaluate the process of respiration.

Experiments on respiration include demonstration of water loss, diaphragm action, and volume measurement of exhaled air, oxygen intake and composition of exhaled air.

On the surface of a glass slide, gentle exhalation through mouth shows appearance of water droplets which proves the presence of moisture in the exhaled air.

Exhaled air contains more carbon dioxide which turns lime water milky white faster than the inhaled air which proves that exhaled air contains more amount of carbon dioxide.

Balloons can be used to demonstrate the action of diaphragm during breathing. The balloons expand in the same way as lungs expand during inspiration and collapse of balloons is similar to the collapse of lungs during expiration.

The volume of exhaled air can be measured by measuring the volume of expelled water after blowing out the air in the short tube.

In a tight jar the flame of burning candle goes out earlier when placed with live animal in comparison to when it is placed with dead animal, which shows that living animals consume oxygen during respiration.
