Animal Tissues

Animal body is made up of different types of tissues. Tissues are formed of a group of cells which are similar in structure and function.

The types of animal tissues include epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue and nervous tissue.

The epithelial tissue performs the function of protection, excretion, secretion, sensation and absorption. Epithelial tissues are protective tissue covering all body parts.

Depending upon structure and shape, there are different types of epithelial tissues- squamous, cuboidal, columnar, etc. Columnar epithelia mostly serve as barrier layers while cuboidal epithelia usually form the lining of glands.

Depending on the number of layers present, epithelium may be simple or stratified.

Connective tissue helps in maintaining the shape of the body and its organs. It is classified as, connective tissue proper, supportive connective tissue and fluid connective tissue.Bone and cartilage are connective tissues forming the structural framework of the body.

Fluid connective tissue is of two types, namely;blood and lymph. Blood is the fluid connective tissue which helps in the transport of metabolites to different parts of the body.

Muscular tissue aids in contraction and movement of the body muscles. Muscular tissues present in our body are of various types such as striated, muscles and cardiac.

Nervous tissue helps in coordination of different organs.Neurons are the structural and functional unit of nervous system. It consists of cell body, axon and dendrites.
