NEP proposes a shift from rote learning to a multidisciplinary approach that focuses on overall development of students. This involves enhancing their social, creative, emotional and ethical capacities along with cognitive skills. But what is the right way for schools to drive these changes?
The policy suggests a shift from conventional teaching practices to more creative and experiential methods that encourages teachers to stimulate children’s imagination and give them a fresh perspective on learning. According to NEP 2020, “Pedagogy must evolve to make education more experiential, holistic, integrated, inquiry-driven, discovery-oriented, learner-centered, discussion-based, flexible, and, of course, enjoyable.” Schools should foster a multidisciplinary approach to education that eliminates the rigid separation between Arts, Science and Humanities based subjects giving students more freedom to choose their own learning trajectories. Integrating technology like Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and interactive learning content plays a huge role in creating a collaborative classroom environment, which is a key aspect of the holistic learning experience. NEP also suggests including contemporary subjects like Artificial Intelligence (AI), holistic health and vocational subjects like carpentry, metal work, pottery, electric work etc. to introduce students to real-world jobs. The idea is to help students actually discover their passions, build job-specific skills and become future-ready.
