Is CUET a game-changer for Indian Education System?

The Common University Entrance Exam, or CUET, is a paradigm shift from traditional college-specific entrance exams to a centralized exam covering major undergraduate courses at more than 40 Central Universities nationwide. Like JEE and NEET, CUET will be a centralized exam for admission to various programs.

Sky-high cut-offs in universities, like Delhi University, and even students with 100% scores are jostling for seats. CUET will give a second opportunity to all the students to show their potential even if they are unable to score well in their board examinations.

CUET is a new concept that has alarmed students, but it might be a game-changer, providing a level playing field for all students, irrespective of location, socio-economic status, or educational background.

CUET aims to bridge the gap for students from different areas and different boards. The students need to give just one entrance instead of multiple entrances for various colleges.

Why is a common entrance test the right thing?

When we look at the world’s finest colleges, we observe a focus on comprehensive development. Admissions criteria range from interpersonal communication to the capacity to chart one’s own learning path to determine a candidate’s genuine potential.

CUET is one of the necessary first steps toward reforming our education system aligned with NEP 2020. We will only truly empower students starting from the current batch and make the new reforms a success. Clear communication of examination details and detailed sample papers will create a more level playing field for students across India.

The CUET-UGC’s goal is to remove the disparity in evaluation methods. It will not only facilitate the admissions process but also have a significant positive impact on student’s future careers. However, 12th-grade marks will have little effect during the applications as universities will continue to request them as a qualification criterion.

Conclusion

The CUET has the potential to be a game changer in higher education by bridging the gap formed by different education boards’ evaluation methodologies. With CUET, students will be able to concentrate on one single entrance exam rather than writing multiple tests for each university. The goals set for the CUET are laudable and will possibly change the Indian education system in a few years.
