In this poem, the poet talks about a character called Champa who is an illiterate village girl and this poem revolves around this character. What did she say, why did she say so, the poet has presented this through this poem. Champa is the daughter of a cowherd and she is very beautiful, but she does not have much knowledge of reading and writing. That is why whenever the poet used to read sitting beside her, she used to listen carefully to what he read. For Champa, studies are like blots of ink on a piece of paper therefore she did not enjoy reading poems and whenever the poet asked her to read, she would say that these are Gandhi Baba’s lectures and she used to avoid him by saying that she doesn’t want to read.
Sometimes she would steal the poet’s pen and paper so that he wouldn’t have to write anything and keep talking to her.. Sometimes the poet enjoyed these antics very much, and other times he used to get annoyed.
The poet tells Champa that education is very important. After studying, the daughter goes to her in-laws’ house and if Champa studies, she will get married and her husband will also go to Kolkata to work.
