Answer: As a vagabond , Soapy had no shelter or house to protect him from the chilly winters. He desired to be detained to secure a jail inorder to comfortably pass the bitter cold season.. He would have laboured assiduously and been successful in running a resting place if he were a man of honour and self-respect. He wanted to start his life all over again after realising the power of being youthful and there was a sudden change in his perspective. He desired to lead an honourable and dignified life. Despite his failure, there was a good probability that he would soon have a decent life.
