What You Need to Know for Exercise 1.1

  • One lakh is written as 1,00,000. It is the smallest 6-digit number and comes just after 99,999, the largest 5-digit number.
  • The largest number with n digits is formed by writing the digit 9, n times. So the largest 4-digit number is 9,999 and the largest 5-digit number is 99,999.
  • In the Indian place value system, the places go ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, then lakh. Commas are placed as 1,00,000.
  • 1 lakh = 100 thousands = 10 ten-thousands. This is why 1,00,000 comes right after 99,999.

Q1. According to the 2011 Census, the population of the town of Chintamani was about 75,000. How much less than one lakh is 75,000?

Answer:
Population of the town in 2011 = 75,000
One lakh is written as 1,00,000.
To find how much less 75,000 is, we subtract the smaller number from the larger number.
Since 1,00,000 − 75,000 = 25,000
Therefore, 75,000 is 25,000 less than one lakh.

Q2. The estimated population of Chintamani in the year 2024 is 1,06,000. How much more than one lakh is 1,06,000?

Answer:
Population of the town in 2024 = 1,06,000
One lakh is written as 1,00,000.
To find how much more 1,06,000 is, we subtract one lakh from it.
Since 1,06,000 − 1,00,000 = 6,000
Therefore, 1,06,000 is 6,000 more than one lakh.

Q3. By how much did the population of Chintamani increase from 2011 to 2024?

Answer:

Population in 2011 = 75,000
Population in 2024 = 1,06,000
Increase in population = Population in 2024 − Population in 2011
Increase in population from 2011 to 2024 = 1,06,000 − 75,000 = 31,000
Thus, the population of Chintamani increased by 31,000 from 2011 to 2024.
