People in different regions are different from each other, but they share the same basic necessities of life such as food, shelter, clothes, etc. Even if we talk about children, they perform the same activities even in distant lands. They stay close to nature and even take care of nature.
Life in the Amazon Basin
Class 7 Geography Chapter 8 gives an idea of the Amazon Basin, a tropical region close to the equator. It is located between 10°N and 10°S; therefore, it is also called an equatorial region. To the east, the Amazon river reaches the Atlantic ocean. Several tributaries of the Amazon river collectively form the Amazon Basin. In this chapter, students will learn that the Amazon basin drains into some parts of Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Columbia.
Climate
Chapter 8 Human Environment interaction lets students study in depth the Amazon Basin. It stretches directly on the equator, the area experiences a hot and humid climate throughout the year. Both days and nights are equally hot and humid, and this region experiences rainfall almost daily. The temperature during the day is high, with intense humidity. The temperature drops at night, however, the humidity level remains the same.
Rainforests
There is a lot of rainfall in the Amazon Basin area, which is why you will see lush green forests with thick canopy there. Dense forests prevent the sunlight from reaching the ground, and therefore the ground stays completely dark and damp. It means the plants that can tolerate shade can only grow in this region which doesn’t require enough sunlight. This region is rich in flora and fauna. Birds such as hummingbirds and toucans also seen in India can be found here. Various animals like ant-eating tapirs, monkeys, and sloths can also be found here Reptiles such as snakes, pythons, anaconda, etc. are found in abundance. Besides this, this region is also home to thousands of species of insects and a wide variety of fishes like the flesh-eating Piranha fish.
People of the Rainforests
This chapter also talks about the people living in that rainforest area. People living there grow their food in small areas of land. Women take care of the crops while men hunt and do fishing. Tapioca, sweet potato, and pineapple are generally grown in the Amazon basin. Burn agriculture and splash are practiced by the people of this area. Manioc, an underground vegetable also called Cassava is the staple diet of the region.
You will also study why cash crops such as cocoa and coffee are grown in this region. Rainforests have an abundance of wood, and thus, some people living there live in thatched-roof houses, whereas others live in larger apartments known as Maloca with a steeply slanting roof.
You wiĺl also study how the Amazon basin region has changed over a period of time. In 1970 Trans Amazon highway made the Amazon basin more accessible with aircraft and helicopters. The population from this area relocated to new places where they still continue to cultivate their crops.
Due to various developmental activities, the rainforest area is getting destroyed and its biologically diverse rainforests have shrunk due to the destruction of forests. The incessant rainfall washed away the topsoil turning the lush green forest into dry and barren land.
Life in The Ganga – Brahmaputra Basin
Ganga-Brahmaputra basin is another region you will study in Class 7 Geography Chapter 8. This basin is formed by the tributaries of Ganga and Brahmaputra in the Indian subcontinent. It lies in the subtropical region between 10°N to 30°N latitudes. This area experiences a monsoon climate which brings rain from mid-June to mid September. Summers are hot and winters are cold in this region.
The topography of the basin is varied, and the distribution of the population is according to the environmental conditions. While the high mountain areas have less population due to inhospitable terrain whereas, plain areas are most convenient and suitable for habitation has a dense population. . As the land is most fertile in the plains, people there depend mostly on agriculture. Paddy is the most commonly grown crop in this area because it requires plenty of water.
