Chapter 14 – The Story of Food discusses the origin of food (whether from plants or animals) and who prepares it. The purpose of the first part is to teach students that we should share work in the family so that it does not become a burden for anyone.
The first part addresses how we all should share the work in the house. It talks about two families – Venu’s family and Rani’s family. There are pictures showing how families are sharing the work. The first picture shows Venu’s mother cooking and her father cleaning the floor. However, in Rani’s family, mother is cooking food.
In the second group of pictures, Venu and her parents are having food together. However, in Rani’s family, the food is being served to her brother and father. In the third group of pictures, Venu’s parents are reading a newspaper and Venu is riding a bicycle. However, Rani and her mother are working while father is reading a newspaper.
The purpose of this chapter is to encourage students to observe their surroundings and share their household chores.
The second part of the NCERT Chapter 14 talks about the source of food. Children will identify food and categorise them under headings – leaves, flowers, fruits, and other parts of the plant. They will also learn if the food is coming from plants, animals, or any other source.
