The scientific theory regarding tectonic movement describes the large scale motion of seven large plates and the factors influencing it. The model builds on continental drift, an idea developed in the first decades of the twentieth century. Following seafloor expansion in the late 1950s and the beginning of the sixties, the geoscientific group embraced the plate-tectonic theory.

The rigid external shell of the planet (crust and upper mantle) is the lithosphere and is divided into tectonic plates. The lithosphere of the Earth consists of seven or eight major plates and many small plates. Where the plates cross, the form of boundary defines its relative motion: convergent, divergent or shifting. The flat borders (or faults) involve earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountaineering and formation of oceanic trenches. The relative rotation of the plates is usually between nil and 100 mm per year.  Tectonic plates consist of oceanic lithosphere and a thicker continental lithosphere, each of which is covered by its own crust type. The bottom carries into the mantle along converging borders, subduction or one plate moving under another. By forming a new (oceanic) crust along divergent margins through seafloor expansion, the lost material is roughly balanced. Therefore, the lithosphere's overall composition remains the same. This observation of the tectonic plates is also known as the theory of the conveyor belt. Older ideas indicated a gradual decline (contraction) or slow development of the globe as disproved. Tectonic plates can move because the lithosphere of the Earth has greater mechanical strength than the asthenosphere at the bottom. 

Lateral density changes in the mantle lead to convection, that is to say to the Earth's solid mantle's slow creeping movement. Plate migration is thought to be driven by a combination of the motion of the seafloor away from spreading ridges due to topographical variations (the ridge is a topographical high) and changes in crowd population (density decreases when the newly formed crust cools and is moving away from the ridge). In subduction areas, the relatively cold, dense crust "pulls" or sinks into the mantle over a mantle cell's downward conveyor limb. The various forces generated by tidal forces of the Sun and Moon are another explanation. There is still much debate on the relative importance of each of these variables and their interaction with each other.
