Class 6 Science Chapter 2 Components of Food

To begin with, the food we eat is made up of components known as nutrients. These nutrients are significant for our bodies nutritional needs. Vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are the most common nutrients obtained from food. In addition to these, food contains dietary fibres and water as well. All of these major food components will be discussed in this chapter.

2.1 What do different food items contain?

This section of NCERT Class 6 Science Chapter 2 explains why it’s so important to eat the right food in the right amount. Food, as we all know, is required for all living organisms for the functioning of their bodies. When a person does not eat, they feel weak and are more likely to become ill.

Food gives us energy to work, aids cell growth, and protects us from diseases. Nutrients are ingredients or components in food that our bodies require. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the major nutrients in our food that are required for living beings to survive.

2.2  What do multiple nutrients do for our bodies?

Students are taught that nutrients are beneficial to the body and that each nutrient is essential. Carbohydrates are the components in our food that normally provide energy to our bodies. Carbohydrates can be found in wheat, rice, sugarcane, and fruits. Fats can be found in butter, ghee, groundnuts, and various edible oils. In our bodies, fats serve as fuel, as they provide more energy than carbohydrates. But we must keep in mind that excessive fat deposition is harmful to the body as it can cause obesity. Protein-rich foods are also required for our bodies’ growth and repair. Protein aids in the healing of wounds caused by sharp objects in our bodies. Protein-rich foods include milk, fish, meat, cheese, moong, and peas.

2.3 Balanced diet

This section discusses the importance of a balanced diet in our lives. Not all foods contain all the essential nutrients like fats, proteins, or carbohydrates in the right quantity. Some foods contain fat, while others contain protein, starch, or nutrient components. Malnutrition is a condition that occurs when the body does not gain the right amount of nutrients or enough food.

A balanced meal is one in which all of the essential nutrients, roughage and water are present in the proper proportions. As a result, a balanced diet is determined by the amount of physical labour performed and the individual’s age.

2.4 Deficiency Diseases

When the food lacks the right amount of nutrition, it can cause deficiency in human bodies. You might have come across people with poor or lost vision. This happens due to the deficiency of  vitamin A, which causes night blindness. Furthermore, if a person has weak muscles and little energy to work, he may be suffering from Beriberi, or a deficiency of Vitamin B1. Protein deficiency may result in Kwashiorkor. Vitamin deficiency can also result in other diseases such as anaemia, scurvy, and rickets. Water is also vital for our survival. Dehydration can also be caused by a lack of water. Here’s a short note of the different deficiencies discussed in the chapter.

  • Loss of vision due to lack of vitamin A
  • Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C
  • Bone and tooth decay is caused by a lack of calcium in the body
  • Beri is caused by a Vitamin B1 deficiency
  • Rickets are caused by an inadequacy of vitamin D
  • Anaemia due to a lack of iron
  • Goitre is a condition caused by a lack of iodine in the body
