Ans. Government is the mechanism or groups which governs and implements decisions in an organized manner formed under certain written rules.
Five ways in which government affects our daily life:
(i) It protects the boundaries of the country and maintain peaceful relations with other countries.
(ii) It takes action on many social issues.
(iii) It ensures welfare of its citizens and provides health facilities.
(iv) It ensures the supply of food and drinking water to its people.
(v) It helps in running of the postal and railways services.
Q.2 Why do you think the government needs to make rules for everyone in the form of laws?
Ans. Government needs to make rules for everyone in the form of laws because:
(i) It helps in preventing the authority from the misuse of their powers.
(ii) It helps in the functioning of the government.
(iii) It helps people in leading a normal and peaceful life.
(iv) It ensures the security of a nation and its people.
Q.3 Name two essential features of a democratic government.
Ans. Two essential features of a democratic government are as follows:
(i) People have the right to elect their own government through elections.
(ii) Government is accountable to its people.
(iii) Universal Adult Franchise.
Q.4 What was the suffrage movement? What did it accomplish?
Ans. Suffrage means right to vote. Women and the poor had to fight for participation in government all over Europe and USA. During the First World War, it got strengthened and came to be known as the suffrage movement.
It gave the right to vote to the American women in 1920 and women in the UK got to vote on the same terms as men in 1928.
Q.5 Gandhiji strongly believed that every adult in India should be given the right to vote. However, a few people don’t share his views. They feel that illiterate people, who are mainly poor, should not be given the right to vote. What do you think? Do you think this would be a form of discrimination? Give five points to support your view and share these with the class.
Ans. I do not agree with the people who do not want to give the right to vote to poor and illiterate people as it constitutes a form of discrimination. According to the Indian Constitution, every adult Indian citizen has a right to vote.
Five points to support these views are:
A true democracy supports equality and justice for all.
In representative democracies, people do not participate directly but, instead, choose their representatives through an election process.
In a democracy, one can change the government if it does not work well, so every adult should get a right to choose his/her government.
Being illiterate cannot be the reason for not allowing one to vote. An illiterate person can have a strong character which may help him/her to understand what is good or bad for him/her and the country.
The right to vote is the birthright of every individual who has attained the age of eighteen or more.
