CBSE Class VI Computer Science Chapter 11 – Introduction to Windows

Microsoft introduced an operating environment Windows on November 20, 1985 in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces. Microsoft Windows is a family of operating systems for personal computers. Microsoft Windows 7 was released on July 22, 2009 and reached the general retail availability worldwide on October 22, 2009. It is an operating system that can be used in personal computers, laptops, mobiles etc.

Desktop is a work area on Windows OS where applications and document windows are placed and arranged to work efficiently. Jump Lists is used to jump to the documents, pictures, songs or websites that the user frequently opens. Windows 7 organises files and folders in Libraries instead of the Document folder. There are separate libraries for specific content such as downloads, music, pictures, videos etc.

The Control Panel contains tools that change the way Windows looks and behaves. Control Panel can be used to create user accounts, add and remove programs, change screen resolutions, change language setting, add and remove hardware and devices and find and fix problems etc. Network and Internet contains tools that can be used to check the status of a network, change the settings, set preferences for sharing files and computers, configure Internet connections etc. Troubleshooting programs can automatically fix some common problems of the computer. It may ask certain questions or reset the common settings, as it works to fix the problems.
