Chapter 17 of CBSE Class 11 NCERT Book Aroh is a poem Gazal by Dushyant Kumar. Dushyant Kumar was a well-known Hindi poet who published Gazals in both Hindi and Urdu. Most people usually do not know that a “Gazal” or “Ghazal” is a format of Persian or Urdu poetry and not just anything sung in an Indian Classical style of singing. Here is a brief introduction to Gazal. The Ghazal originated in Persia during the tenth century. The Indian Ghazal is rooted in the Indian ethos, despite being Persian in origin. A camp language born in India, Urdu, is the primary language of this form of poetry. However, Ghazals have been written in English, Hindi, Braj, etc., and there have been several renowned poets in these languages. The first evidential ghazal was written by Amir Khusro in the thirteenth century. In his ghazal, he blends two cultures wrapped in two languages – half the lines are in Persian and the other half are in Brij-bhasha. Each couplet is arranged in such a manner. Eventually, it moved to the Deccan with the regime and later to the North, becoming a sophisticated and elegant court language in the process.
Urdu ghazals reached their peak in Delhi and Lucknow in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Ghazals contain couplets, each of which is complete in itself and has no relation to the other couplets in the ghazal in terms of thought content. There is a common rhyme scheme in a ghazal, but the couplets are not linked thematically. Ghazals have no thematic continuity, but this is precisely what makes them so special and unique; those who seek a logical development of ideas in a poem can find the fragmentary thought structure of the Ghazal puzzling. Couplets are self-contained, containing the whole of an idea, and are, therefore, poems on their own. Couplets can encompass and describe the complexity of human experience, regardless of their limited space. An important characteristic of the Ghazal is its poetic compression. Some of the most famous poets of Ghazal are Ghalib, Meer, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Jaun Eliya, etc.
The chapter, however, does not talk about the format of a ghazal, but an introduction will help students understand it. Hindi ghazalkar Dushyant Kumar was born in Rajpur Nawada in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh on September 1, 1933. Originally named Dushyant Kumar Tyagi, he began writing poetry under the name Dushyant Kumar Pardeshi. Writing poems started in 10th grade and then took on a new dimension as he studied at Allahabad University. During this time, he was involved with organisations like Paramal and Nai Patta and organised theAllahabad Association of Litterateurs. There was a popular friendship between Kamleshwar, Markandeya, and Dushyant in Allahabad during those times.
Although he wrote poetry, plays, one-acts, and novels in a variety of genres, he gained lasting popularity for his ghazals. The words he uses to question the irony of the times, such as ‘hungama khada karna mera maqsad nahi,’ echo from Parliament into the streets, where the common man is also able to find his voice. The ghazals he wrote are mounted on people’s tongues as weapons for testing and fighting the passing of time.
‘सूर्य का स्वागत’, ‘आवाज़ों के घेरे’, ‘जलते हुए वन का वसंत’’ are his collections of poetry, while ‘छोटे-छोटे सवाल’, ‘आँगन में एक वृक्ष’ और ‘दुहरी ज़िंदगी’ are his collections of novels. ‘Aur Messiah Mar Gaya’ is his famous play and ‘Mann Ke Kon’ is his one-act play. He has also composed a poetry-play titled ‘Ek Kantha Vishpayi’. The basis of his enduring fame is his only collection of ghazals, ‘Saye Mein Dhoop’, whose dozens of ghazals accompany every day in Hindi dialogue and speech.
In 1975, he died at the age of 42. The Government of India has issued a postage stamp in his honour. He has been commemorated in the ‘Dushyant Kumar Memorial Manuscript Museum’.
