कहाँ तो तय था चिराग़ाँ हरेक घर के लिए,

Hindi ghazalkar Dushyant Kumar was born in Rajpur Nawada in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh on September 1, 1933. Originally named Dushyant Kumar Tyagi, he began writing poetry under the name Dushyant Kumar Pardeshi. Writing poems started in 10th grade and then took on a new dimension as he studied at Allahabad University. During this time, he was involved with organisations like Paramal and Nai Patta and organised theAllahabad Association of Litterateurs. There was a popular friendship between Kamleshwar, Markandeya, and Dushyant in Allahabad during those times.

Although he wrote poetry, plays, one-acts, and novels in a variety of genres, he gained lasting popularity for his ghazals. The words he uses to question the irony of the times, such as ‘hungama khada karna mera maqsad nahi,’ echo from Parliament into the streets, where the common man is also able to find his voice. The ghazals he wrote are mounted on people’s tongues as weapons for testing and fighting the passing of time.

‘सूर्य का स्वागत’, ‘आवाज़ों के घेरे’, ‘जलते हुए वन का वसंत’’ are his collections of poetry, while  ‘छोटे-छोटे सवाल’, ‘आँगन में एक वृक्ष’ और ‘दुहरी ज़िंदगी’ are his collections of novels. ‘Aur Messiah Mar Gaya’ is his famous play and ‘Mann Ke Kon’ is his one-act play. He has also composed a poetry-play titled ‘Ek Kantha Vishpayi’. The basis of his enduring fame is his only collection of ghazals, ‘Saye Mein Dhoop’, whose dozens of ghazals accompany every day in Hindi dialogue and speech.

In 1975, he died at the age of 42. The Government of India has issued a postage stamp in his honour. He has been commemorated in the ‘Dushyant Kumar Memorial Manuscript Museum’.
