What is Capacity?
The quantity of liquid such as water, milk or juice etc. is called its volume. The amount of any liquid a container can hold is called the capacity of the container. We can measure the volumes of liquids such as milk, petrol, water or kerosene by filling them in a container whose capacity is known to us.
The litre and millilitre are the two common units of capacity.
1000 millilitres (ml) = 1 litre ( l )
Half of 1 litre (l) = 500 ml
- A millilitre is a very tiny measurement of capacity. For instance, a teaspoon has a volume of approximately 5 ml.
- A larger unit of capacity is a litre. Your water bottle, for instance, holds roughly 1l.
Big containers will hold more liquid. This represents a larger container capacity. Small containers will hold less liquid. This describes that the container of small capacity. Example: A pot will hold more water. A glass will hold less water.

Volume can be defined as the space occupied by an object or substance like gas, solid or liquid. It is a 3 dimensional entity that is enclosed with a boundary.
A juice container has the capacity of 10,000 ml. In the container 1 / 4 th of the juice is filled. Calculate the quantity of juice present in the container.
Solution: The capacity of the container is 10,000 ml. Hence 10,000 ml = 10,000 * 1 / 10,000 = 10 ml. Therefore the container is filled with 1 / 4 th of its capacity which is 1 / 4 th * 10 = 2.5 L.
