For example, if we have 10 pieces of candies and wish to divide them equally among 5 people then how does one proceed? In this case, we need to offer 2 pieces to each person for an equal division, i.e., 10 candies divided by 5 persons = 2 candies per person. By doing so we are sharing or dividing the candies equally amongst all.
Division is represented by the symbol ‘÷ ‘and involves sharing or splitting something.
Let us elaborate on the concept using a simple example.
If 48 oranges are to be packed in 6 boxes then how many oranges would go in each bag?
Mathematically this will be written as 48 ÷ 6 = 8. That is 8 oranges in each box.
Now coming to the method through which we arrived at this answer:
Here we have 48 oranges which we have divided into 6 boxes. This means 48 is the dividend or the number to be divided. And 6 is the divisor or the number used to divide the dividend. The number that we get after dividing is called the quotient, in this case, 8.
Why Do We Divide by Six Boxes?
To understand this let us turn to multiplication. We are aware that 6x8 = 48. In this case, 6 and 8 are called factors of 48, while 48 is referred to as the multiple. Whenever a multiple is divided by a factor, the answer is the other factor. So, in a way, we will be right in saying that division is the opposite of multiplication.
This also means that a knowledge of tables is essential in order to be quick in solving division problems. Knowing the tables is of big help in making division problem solving faster and easier.
Other Ways of Distribution
There are more ways to divide the oranges into boxes. The oranges can be divided into 3 equal parts or 4 equal parts or 8 equal parts too. If we do this, the number of boxes required will change. Let us see how many boxes will be needed depending on the new distribution:
 For dividing into 3 equal parts we will need 16 boxes (48 ÷ 3 = 16)
 For dividing into 4 equal parts we will need 12 boxes (48 ÷ 4 = 12)
 For dividing into 8 equal parts we will need 6 boxes (48 ÷ 8 = 6)
 Guess how many boxes will be needed for dividing into 12 equal parts?
The answer is 4 boxes. (48 ÷ 12 = 4)
