Different modes of transportation- roadways, railways, waterways, airways and finally the evolution of communication systems with the help of print and electronic media transformed the process of communication. Technology developed by humans enhanced interconnectivity of people, services and institutions across the world and turned it into a global society.
Class 7, Geography Chapter 7, explains about various settlements where people build their homes. In the beginning, humans lived in forests and caves and spent life travelling from one place to another. However, when they started cultivating crops, the necessity for a permanent home arose. Fertile lands were the places where most of the settlements began. The human settlement started growing with more advancements such as trade, commerce, and manufacturing.
There are two types of settlements, urban and rural. The villages are rural settlements where people usually perform fishing, trading crafts, agricultural activities, etc. The urban settlements are places that have jobs, better education, medical facilities, industries and other service sectors.
Transport
Class 7 Geography chapter 7 includes the study of transport used in the past through which goods moved from one place to another. When there were no roads, people had to travel long distances themselves. To ease the travelling, they also rode on animals to cover distances. But, this was a time and energy-consuming process. After the invention of the wheel, transportation became easier and less time consuming.
In the beginning , mules, donkeys, camels, and horses were used in the country for transportation. Traders from outside the country travelled either through sea or via land routes. Gradually with the passage of time different means of transportation developed such as the invention of aeroplanes made transportation faster.
Nowadays, there are four major means of transportation: airways, roadways, waterways, and railways.
Roadways
NCERT solutions for Class 7 Geography Chapter 7 let students learn about the roads that are the most common methods of transport, especially for shorter distances. The roads can be metalled, pucca, unmetalled or kutcha. The development of roads has also been made possible even in deserts, forests, and mountain areas. India has the highest accessible road available, which is the Manali-Leh highway. There are also underground roads which are called underpaths or subways. Flyovers were built over raised structures.
Railways
Class 7 Geography Chapter 7 explores the development of the rail transportation system for students. Railways are one of the best and cheapest means of transport for long distances. These can also carry heavy weights. The invention of the steam engine has contributed amazingly to the speed development of the railways. Now electric and diesel engines have replaced the steam engines. Superfast trains operate in many regions across the world, reducing the time it takes to travel long distances.. Indian Railways is the largest rail network in Asia and has been significantly developed over a period of time.
Waterways
Waterways have been used for transportation since ancient times. . These offer the cheapest means to transport heavy and bulky weights over long distances. They are of two types- sea routes, and inland waterways.
Inland waterways are navigable rivers and lakes, just like Ganga and Brahmaputra, the Great lakes in North America and the river Nile in Africa.
Sea routes are used to transport items from one country to another. These are connected with the seaports. Some important ports are: Singapore and Mumbai in Asia, London and Rotterdam in Europe.
Airways
In the early 20th century, the fastest mode of transportation was the airways. NCERT solutions Class 7 Geography Chapter 7, students will learn about this mode of transport. It is one of the most expensive means of transportation because of the higher fuel rates and other factors. However, it is the only means to let you land in distant and remote places where no other means is available. Even in case of calamities , the airway transportation method is used to facilitate people with rescue operations, food, water, and more. It’s extremely useful in most inaccessible areas.
Communication
Communication is the term used for conveying messages from one person to another. Different modes of communication are used to communicate, educate, entertain, or provide information to people. The methods that exist today include television, radio, newspapers, etc. we can communicate with a larger number of people called mass media.
