The census also found that Muslim girls are more likely to leave school before completing their primary education than SC, and ST girls.

Schooling and Education Today

In today’s time, both boys and girls attend school. Still, there are massive differences in the numbers of both. The percentage of literate men is higher than women. The reasons for drop-out are many. One of the prominent ones is marriage, especially in the SC, ST, and Muslim communities. A few other reasons are not good or supportive teachers, lack of schools, travelling long distances for attending school and high fees.

Women’s Movement

The shift toward women’s empowerment was not brought in a day. It was a long struggle and countless movements for women to reach where they are today. . Many women’s organisations as well as  individual women fought together to bring about the changes which turned into a vibrant movement. This is known as the women’s movement. Some men who believed in feminism also staunchly supported the movement.


The success of the women’s movement was because of the campaigns they undertook to fight against discrimination. These campaigns were so intense that they caused the laws to change. For instance, in 1997, a law to protect women against sexual harassment in the workplace and other environments was passed. Further,  a law against domestic violence was passed in 2006.
