a) Following are the five things that I did over the one week to conserve our natural resources:

  1. Saved electricity by turning off the switches of bulbs and fans that were not in use
  2. Used stairs instead of lift
  3. Preferred to walk or use bicycle instead of using vehicles Repaired leaky taps
  4. Used empty plastic bottles for carrying drinking water
  5. Written on both sides of the paper.

  1. Wasted water while cleaning house, washing car, watering lawn and bathing
  2. Forgot to switch off the water geyser
  3. Used bulbs
  4. Thrown lunch in schools and wasted cooked food
  5. TV remained on while I was doing homework

The consumption of the various natural resources can be reduced:

  1. By saving electricity by switching off unnecessary lights and fans
  2. By use of fluorescent tubes
  3. Using of stairs instead of lift
  4. Bu turning off the engine of the vehicle while waiting on red lights
  5. By repairing leaky taps
  6. By not wasting food

How can you as an individual contribute or make a difference to the management of (a) forests and wildlife, (b) water resources and (c) coal and petroleum ?

A:

a) Forest and Wildlife: Management of forest resources require an active participation of the local people. My contributions in the management of forest resources will be:

  1. to ensure people’s active participation.
  2. to ensure an equitable distribution of resources in a sustainable manner so that an optimum amount of produce is left for the future generations.

b) Water resources: In our day lives, knowingly and unknowingly we waste lot of water water which must be stopped. My contributions in the management of water resources will be:

  1. to cultivate those habits that can help in saving water or reducing water loss at home and school.
  2. by adopting any water harvesting technique, so that water can be conserved.

c) Coal and petroleum: These are the main source of energy today. We can save them in many ways. For example:

  1. By the use of fluorescent tubes
  2. By switching off unnecessary electric and electronic devices
  3. By reducing the use of vehicles and prefer walking or cycling
  4. By turning off the engines of the vehicles while waiting on red lights
  5. By using solar devices and stairs instead of lift

We saw in this chapter that there are four main stakeholders when it comes to forests and wildlife. Which among these should have the authority to decide the management of forest produces? Why do you think so?

A:

Out of four stakeholders such as the local people, the forest department, the industrialist and the wildlife and nature enthusiast, I think the authority to decide the management of forest produces should be given to the local people i.e., the people who live nearby or in the forests. For centuries, the local people are the one who are using forests the most. They had developed certain practices that an optimum amount of produce is left for the future generations. With time the local people have learnt to use forest in a sustainable manner.

Can you suggest some changes in your school which would make it environment-friendly?

A:

Following habits can be adapted at schools in order to be environment friendly:

  1. Switching off the electrical appliances that are not in use saves electricity
  2. Turning the water taps off when not required saves water
  3. Throwing wastes according to their biodegradability
  4. Planting trees in the school garden
