Tris Formula

Tris Formula

Tris Formula is an organic chemical that is commonly used as a buffer solution in biochemistry and molecular biology. Tris Formula is a white crystalline powder that is an amine proton acceptor. It is used as an emulsifying agent in the pharmaceutical industry to make cosmetic creams, lotions, paraffin wax, and mineral oil, and it is also used in the synthesis of surface-active compounds.

Tris Formula forms compounds with metal ions in solution. To treat severe metabolic acidosis, tromethamine is occasionally used as a medication in medicine, usually in intensive care. Some medications, such as hemabate (carboprost as a trometamol salt) and “ketorolac trometamol,” are intended to be “tromethamine salts.”

Preparation of Tris

Tris Formula is produced industrially by exhaustive condensation of nitromethane with formaldehyde under basic conditions (i.e. multiple Henry reactions) to yield the intermediate (HOCH2)3CNO2, which is then hydrogenated to yield the final product.

Structure of Tris

It is the main amino molecule tert-butylamine, in which one hydrogen is removed from each methyl group and replaced by a hydroxy group.

Properties Of Tris

Tris Formula has the chemical formula C4H11NO3.

The atomic weight is 121.136 g/mol.

It has a density of 1.328g/cm3.

Tris is also known by the chemical names Tris base, Tris buffer, Trizma, Trisamine, THAM, Tromethamine, Trometamol, Tromethane, and Trisaminol.

It has an acidity of 8.07 pKa.

Tris has a melting point of 175-176 °C.

Tris has a boiling point of 219 °C.

Uses of Tris

The various uses of Tris Formula are given below:

Tris is also used in chemical analysis as a primary standard to standardise acid solutions.

Tris is frequently used to increase the permeability of cell membranes.

It is a component of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and the Modern COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11.

Tris Formula is used instead of sodium bicarbonate to treat metabolic acidosis.

It is used as an emulsifying agent in the pharmaceutical industry to make cosmetic creams, lotions, paraffin wax, and mineral oil, and it is also used in the synthesis of surface-active compounds.

Used in buffer solutions such as TAE and TBE buffers, particularly for nucleic acid solutions.

Tromethamine solution has been shown to be particularly effective in treating metabolic acidosis, which can occur during or immediately following cardiac bypass surgery.
