Key Topics Covered In NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 22

Class 5 EVS has chapters in the form of narrative to drive a key message to the students. Below we have represented the key topics covered in our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 22.

Dhannu’s village

All the relatives had come to Dhannu’s home to celebrate Dussehra. They carried their luggage and came in bullock carts. Dhannu’s father was the eldest in the family. Hence, all the festivals were celebrated in their home. Dhannu’s Aai (mother), Mami (mother’s brother’s wife) and Kaki (father’s brother’s wife) were all busy making sweet Rotis made from jaggery and gram (Puran Poli). Along with this, a spicy kadi was prepared. The day passed by, laughing and chatting.

But in the evening, everyone’s mood changes. The women and kids began to pack their luggage. The men sit down with the agent who lends money (mukadam) for the meeting. The agent gives the details of the loan taken by each family.

The agents would explain to the villagers which part they would go to for the next six months. He also gave them some money for their expenses as a loan. Since then, Dhannu remembers, this has been the routine. Families like Dhannu’s work till Dussehra on the lands of big farmers before the rainy season. They earn enough money through this and keep them going for the next few months. This is how a lot of farming labourer families lived in earlier years, and the same is demonstrated very well in our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 22.

It was difficult for them to manage for the next six months when there was no rain and no work in the fields? So, everyone borrows money from the agents. To return this money, they have to work for the agents. The agent is known as Mukadam for sugarcane factories. He helps people find work in sugarcane fields.

In the next few months, Dhannu, along with his parents and other family members and forty-fifty other families from the village, had to stay away from home. In these six months, Dhannu and many other children will not be able to attend school. Dhannu’s aged grandmother, his aunt, who is blind, and his two-month-old cousin’s sister had to stay back in the village. In other families of the village, the old and the  sick people stayed back. Dhannu missed his grandmother.

Students will enjoy the narration given in our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 22 to help them easily understand the challenges faced by Dhannu and many other villagers.

After Dussehra

These families would now stay near the sugarcane fields and sugar factories in the Caravan. They would settle in the huts made of dry sugarcane and its leaves for the next six months. The men would get up early in the morning and go to cut sugarcanes in the fields. The children and women tied the bundles of sugarcane. Then these bundles are taken to the sugar factory. . Dhannu often went with his father. Sometimes, they spent nights on bullock carts outside the factory. There, Dhannu plays with the bullocks and strolls around.

At the factory, Dhannu’s father used to get the sugarcane weighed and took a receipt. The receipt is a note to show how much sugarcane they had given. They showed this receipt to the mukadam, who further keeps an account of their loan. The mukadam also gives them some money for the next week’s expenses. Then Dhannu’s aai and Mami took the children to the nearby village market to buy atta (flour) and oil next week. Sometimes mami purchased laddoos or some sweets for the children. She also brought pencils, an eraser and a notebook for Dhannu.

After all, he is mami’s favourite! But Dhannu won’t be using these for six months because he won’t be going to school. Mami wants Dhannu to study and become recognised in life. She does not want Dhannu to move around with his family like this. Mama and mami tell Dhannu’s parents, “Next time we leave our village after Dussehra, we will leave Dhannu with his Dadi and Chachi. He will go to school like the other children in the village. He should continue his studies. He should study further and become somebody.”

So many villagers face a lot of challenges due to the regular migration that happens for them due to job-related work. Their families, including kids, are impacted.
