Key Topics Covered In NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 21

The chapter covers short narratives of different families, and students can learn and understand better from our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 21.

Gregor Mendel first taught about inheritance and experimented with it on a peas plant to understand what inheritance looks like. According to him, some traits in plants come in pairs (like tall and short- height, green and yellow – color, and small and big – seeds). These characteristics are passed on from one generation (children) to the next generation.

Given below is a summary of Class 5 EVS Chapter 21.

Aaa, ch hee!

A girl named Ashima was reading and sitting next to the window. There was a lot of dust in the air as it was windy. Ashima sneezed very loudly – aaa ch hee! Her parents were sorting out vegetables in the kitchen. Her mother said, “She sneezes loudly as her father does.”

Who is whose aunt?

In the next part of the story, there is a girl named Nilima; she had been to the home of her Nani (mother’s mother) during the school holidays. She saw someone was coming and went to inform her mother, “Amma, mausi (mother’s sister) has come to see you.” Her mother came out. She told Nilima that was not her mausi! And said that it was Nilima’s cousin sister Kiran.

Students will find this story interesting while studying from our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 21, as we have used colourful images to make it more interesting for students.

How we are all related!

Nilima started playing with  Kiran’s son Samir. Her mother called Kiran and said, “Look, my daughter, Nilima’s hair is similar to yours, thick, black and curly. It is good that she does not have hair like mine – straight, brown and limp!” Nilima’s Nani laughed and said, “Yes, it is strange. All sisters had thick, curly hair, but our second generation has similar hair.” Nilima listened to their talks and thought, “We are called ‘distant’ relatives, but we are closely related in many ways!”

Is this a mirror?

In the next part of the chapter, as covered in NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 21, students will learn about twin sisters Saroja and Suvasini. They both are identical twins, and people often get confused between these two sisters. Their mama (mother’s brother) also gets confused when he sees them together.

Sometimes Saroja gets scolded for the mischief done by Suvasini. At times Suvasini tricks her mama and says, “Suvasini has gone out.” But now mama has learnt a trick. He says –Sings a song in Marathi! Why this funny trick?

These sisters were just two weeks old when Saroja’s (father’s brother’s wife) Chachi adopted her and took her to Pune. Everyone in Chachi’s home was fond of music. Mornings began with music at home. Saroja knew many songs in both the languages Tamil and Marathi.

Everyone would communicate in Tamil at home, and most of the children spoke in Marathi at school. Suvasini stays with her father in Chennai. Her father is a karate coach. When she was three years old, Suvasini started practising karate with the other children. During holidays, along with her father, she began practice in the morning. Suvasini and Saroja looked alike but were also very different in many ways.

But not this from parents

Satti was a few months old when one of her legs was affected by Polio. But she never let this come in her way of work and life. Walking long distances and climbing many stairs were part of her work. Later Satti was married. Few people suggested that she should not have kids. She was worried that her children may also get affected by Polio. She consulted a doctor regarding this, and the doctor clarified that Polio is not inherited from parents.

In our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 21, we encourage students to read and then clear misconceptions about common diseases like Polio and Leprosy.

Some from the family, some from the environment

The last part of the chapter discusses Vibha’s story. She knew that her Nana (grandfather) was coming – from his loud laughter. Her Nana talks loudly and hears with great difficulty. Are there people at your home who speak loudly? Or cannot hear clearly? Few people use a machine to listen if they have a hearing problem.
