Shyama has grown sunflower, rose, and marigold plants in her garden. She has planted them in three flower beds. This is how her garden looks. Shyama plants a total of 18 plants in each flower bed.

Each flower bed has a different arrangement of flowers, which is as follows:

1. The roses are arranged three plants in a row. There are six rows, each with three plants of roses. That implies 18 = 6 × 3.
2. The sunflowers have been planted as 18 plants in a row.

That implies 18 = 18 × 1.

1. The marigolds are arranged with nine plants in a row. There are two rows with nine plants of marigolds each.

That implies 18 = 2 × 9.

The example of Shyama’s garden is a perfect example to explain multiplication. Multiplication refers to the arrangement of things in an array. It can be attributed to the arrangement of chairs, children in a school assembly etc.

Table of 7

Students can mix fun and learning by creating tables independently rather than memorising them. Students can build the table of 7 with the help of two tables, the table of 2 and 5.

How Many Cats

Gayatri’s cats were playing in a box. She couldn’t count because all she could see were legs. She counted 28 legs.

There is a simple way of calculating how many cats are in the box.

Number of legs of one cat = 1 × 4 = 4

Number of legs of two cats = 2 × 4 = 8

Number of legs of three cats = 3 × 4 = 12

Number of legs of four cats = 4 × 4 = 16

Jumping Animals

Students might have studied simple division in class three. Students can also understand it easily from the example of a jumping frog.

Looking at the image above, a frog takes three jumps at a time, starting from 0. It can be easy to determine how many jumps it takes to reach number 27.

27 ⁒ 3 = 9 jumps.

Similarly, if we have to determine the number of jumps the frog takes to reach 36, students can divide 36 by 3.

36 ⁒ 3 = 12 jumps.

To find out if the frog is at 42, he has taken 42⁒ 3= 14 jumps to reach this spot.

Sea Shells

Dhruv lives in a coastal area. He considered making necklaces for his three closest buddies. He spent the entire day searching for seashells. By evening, he had collected 112 seashells. He now had a wide array of vibrant and beautiful shells.

He took 28 shells to make one necklace.

He is left with 112 – 28 = 84 shells. Shyam again took 28 shells for the second necklace. He is now left with 84 – 28 = 56 shells.

He then takes another 28 shells from the lot for the third necklace. He is now left with 56 – 28 = 28 shells.

The 112 shells are thus sufficient for Shyam to make necklaces for his three friends.

Twenty-eight shells remain with Shyam. Hence he can make a total of 4 necklaces of 28 shells each with the 112 shells he found at the beach.

Gangu’s Sweets

Gangu is making sweets for Id. He has prepared a tray of 80 laddoos. A girl named Rabiya gives an order of sweets. She requires four laddoos in a box and needs 23 small boxes of such laddoos. First, let us find Rabiya’s requirements:

The number of laddoos in a box = 4.

Therefore, determining the number of laddoos in 23 boxes would require simple multiplication.

The number of laddoos in 23 boxes = 4 × 23 = 92.

We can see with simple multiplication that Rabiya requires 92 laddoos while Gangu only has 80 laddoos prepared with him. Hence Gangu requires 92 – 80 = 12 laddoos more to fulfil Rabiya’s requirement.

In this way, each child will be getting Rs. 14.

Students can now split Rs. 70 among five people equally using their manner. You can start by giving each person Rs 2 if you like. Alternatively, consider beginning with Rs 11 each.

Story Problems

In the picture above, Srishti’s grandma asks her to do math problems. Srishti has successfully created a solvable math problem with the information available to her.

There are three crates, each with 24 bottles, as given by Srishti. Students can find the solution to the problem with the help of simple multiplication:

3 × 24 = 72 bottles. Hence if there are three crates, each with 24 bottles, there are 72 bottles.

Using this as a reference, students can create their math problems. For example, if there are eight packets of rakhi and each packet has six rakhis, find out the total number of rakhis.

Students can find the answer to the problem with the help of simple multiplication again.

Therefore, the total number of rakhis; is 8 × 6 = 48 rakhis.
