Class 6 Chapter 5 – Major Domains of The Earth

Earth is the only planet where life exists. The Earth’s surface is a complex zone where the three major environmental components meet, overlap, and interact with each other. The lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere are the four major domains of the Earth as explained in Major Domains of the Earth Class 6.

  • All solid parts of Earth-like plateaus, mountains, and valleys make up the lithosphere.
  • The hydrosphere comprises water bodies and covers three-quarters of the Earth.
  • The atmosphere forms a protective layer around the Earth,  protecting it from the harmful rays of the sun.
  • The biosphere is the final domain, and it includes all living and non-living things.
  • The Lithosphere is the land’s domain. It is the outermost portion of the Earth, which includes the Upper Mantle as well as the Earth’s Crust.

The lithosphere is further divided into two parts – large land masses called continents and huge water bodies called ocean basins.

Hydrosphere consists of water in all forms. Oceans are a major part of the hydrosphere and more than 71 percent of the Earth is covered with water.

The atmosphere mainly consists of oxygen and nitrogen. Nitrogen constitutes 78%, oxygen constitutes 21% and other gases are 1% in the atmosphere.

The biosphere is the domain of life. The interaction of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere affects the biosphere. It is the domain where life exists.
