(a) (ii) 0°
(b) (i) the Poles
(c) (i) 360
(d) (ii) the Southern hemisphere
(e) (i) the parallels of latitudes and meridians of longitudes
(a) Earth is not a sphere. It is slightly flattened at the North and the South Poles and bulge in the middle. This shape is called “geoid” which means “earth-like shape”.
(b) Globe is a true model or a miniature form of the Earth. It is three dimensional, so the directions, location and surface feature can be accurately shown with the help of globe.
(c) The latitudinal value of the Tropic of Cancer is 23˚30’ N from the Equator.
(d) The three heat zones of the Earth are:
Torrid Zone
Temperate Zone
Frigid Zone
(e)
Parallels of Latitude |
Meridians of Longitude |
These are the horizontal lines. |
These are the vertical lines. |
They run parallel to each other. |
They meet at poles.
|
They are 180 in number. |
There are 360 meridians. |
They determine heat zones of the earth. |
They determine the time zones. |
(f) The Torrid Zone receives maximum amount of heat because the mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes in between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
(g) The earth rotates from west to east. The places, which are to the east of Greenwich, will be ahead of Greenwich Time and those to the west will be behind it. India located east of Greenwich at 82°30'E is 5 hours and 30 minute ahead of GMT. So, when the time is 12:00 noon in London, it is 5:30 p.m. in India.
