Class 12 History part 3 begins with studying the movements of the British when they entered the Indian political scenario and seized control over India from different empires. Chapter 10: Colonialism and the Countryside

Chapter 11: Rebels and the Raj

Explores the factors which caused the first official revolt against British Rule, the Sepoy mutiny, and further follows other movements like the Awadh revolt. It explores who the leaders were, how important decisions were made, how strategies were calculated, and they were communicated to sepoys spread across the country. It recounts how the British suppressed all these revolts and subdued the population. 

Chapter 12: Colonial Cities

Gives an account of the proliferation of colonial rule. It explores how the British transformed the old towns and villages into urban colonies; they organised various sectors of trade and commerce; they collected data about people and organised people into categories. British records inform us about the census, urban development, creation of cantonment areas, hill stations, and British infrastructure. The chapter also recounts the development carried out in major cities like Bombay, Madras and Kolkata. 

Chapter 13: Mahatma Gandhi and National Movements

Focus on Mahatma Gandhi’s role in India’s fight against the British Raj. It traces Mohandas Gandhi’s journey from his fight against discrimination in South Africa, his return to India, his tour around the country to get to know the land, and his unique revolt which pulled him into the limelight. We learn of his movements, the motive and ideology behind them, and their effect on people. We learn how Gandhiji became a political figure and led the biggest front of India’s fight for freedom. 

Chapter 14: Understanding Partition

Explores how the multi-pronged fight for independence led to the partition of one country into two separate nations. Explores the political landscape of that time; what the people wanted, what the leaders wanted, and what pains were taken to create Pakistan out of India. We also find out how the partition impacted millions of people who were made to choose between the two countries.

Chapter 15: Framing and the Constitution

The final chapter of the syllabus describes the formation of the constitution and how it came to effect in India. It reflects on the entirety of efforts, from the first vision of independent India to the ground realities of 1947. The constitution was tasked with rehabilitating a wounded, battered and poor nation; it was tasked with unifying a diverse population and creating general as well as specific guidelines for them.
