The potential difference between two half-cells in an electrochemical cell is measured by the cell potential or Ecell. To measure this, Cell Potential Formula is required. The ability of electrons to move from one-half cell to the other is what determines the potential difference. Due to the fact that the chemical reaction is a redox reaction, electrons can move between the electrodes. When one substance is reduced while another is oxidised, a redox reaction takes place. The substance loses one or more electrons during oxidation, becoming positively charged as a result. In contrast, the substance picks up electrons during reduction and becomes negatively charged. Since the difference between the potential for the reducing agent to become oxidised and the oxidising agent to become reduced will determine the cell potential, this relates to the measurement of the cell potential.
