About JEE Main Exam

JEE Main is a national-level exam held for undergraduates to get admission into different engineering colleges to pursue their dreams. It is India’s one of the most challenging and most competitive exams. Candidates require constant hard work and determination to fare well in an exam as competitive as JEE Main. JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2023

Given below are the JEE Mains eligibility criteria 2023:

  • Nationality:

The applicants should be Indian citizens. NRI’s, PIO’s, OCI’s can also apply for the JEE Main 2023. OCI and NRI candidates who pass the class 12 exam in India will have the same state code of eligibility as Indian citizens. While the candidates passing class 12 exams outside India are eligible for All India quota seats in NIT’s (National Institute of Technology), IIEST’s (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology), and other CFTI’s (Centrally Funded Technical Institutes).

  • Age Criteria:

According to the JEE Main eligibility criteria, candidates do not have an age limit to attempt the JEE Main examination. 

  • Total Attempts:

Candidates are permitted to give a total of 3 consecutive attempts for the JEE Main examination. This means candidates can give a total of 6 attempts (2 per year)

  • Qualifying Exam:

  • The final examination of the class 10+2 conducted by any central or state board. 
  • Intermediate or 2-year Pre-University exam conducted by a recognised Board or University.
  • Final examination of the 2-year course of Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • Any Public School or Board or University examination in India or any foreign country is recognised as equivalent to the class 10+2 by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Compulsory subjects in class 12:
  • B. Tech / B.E.
  • Physics

  • Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject)

  • Year Of Passing the Qualifying Exam: Aspirants who graduated from class 12 in 2020 or 2021 are eligible for JEE Main 2023 examination. The JEE Main eligibility criteria state that candidates currently appearing for their class 12 boards in 2023 are also eligible for the JEE Main 2023 examination. 
  • Diploma Holders: Diploma holders can apply for JEE Main exam, but the rank and the score they achieve will not be factored into their admission to different universities. 
  • Marks Eligibility: Given below is the list of JEE Main
  •  According to the JEE Main eligibility criteria, cutoff marks for candidates from general and reserved categories. 
  •  General category: Candidates must score a minimum of 75% in their class 12 board examination. The other alternative is to achieve the top 20 percentile in their qualifying examination. 
  •  Reserved categories: The cutoff for candidates in the reserved category is 65% in their class 12 board examination. 

Reservation criteria for JEE Main 2023 Exam

JEE Main eligibility criteria for Droppers and Repeaters
  • Candidates who are repeating JEE Main and also candidates who dropped out of class 12 to prepare for the exam will be given the exam. 
  • Candidates of any age can now give the JEE examination. 
  • The candidates must have chosen Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in class 12. 
  • Candidates are given a maximum of three consecutive attempts. 
JEE Main eligibility criteria 2023 for IIT’s, NIT’s and CFTI’s Admission
  • Candidates must have passed class 12 with a minimum score of 75% or must have been in the top 20 percentile in the JEE Main examination. 
  • Candidates aiming in B. Arch or B. Plan need a total aggregate of 50% in class 12 boards. 

State Code of Eligibility for JEE Mains

  • According to the JEE Main eligibility criteria, the state code of eligibility refers to the code of the state where the aspirant has passed the class 12 examination. 
  • The state code of eligibility is not affected by the native place or the candidate’s residential address. 
  • Suppose a candidate has passed class 12 from one state and has given their improvement exam from another state, according to the JEE Main eligibility criteria. In that case, the state code of eligibility will be from the place the candidate first passed class 12. 
  • Candidates opting for open schooling (NIOS) are to select the state of eligibility based on where the study centre is located. 
  • Candidates from Nepal/Bhutan are to select the state of eligibility based on the residential address given in their passports.
  • OCI/PIO passing class 12 examination in India, according to the JEE Main eligibility criteria, has the same state code if eligibility is on par with Indian Nationals. The candidates completing class 12 from abroad are eligible for their state quota seats or all India quota seats.   

In 2018, the organisation conducting the Joint Entrance Examination was changed from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to the National Testing Agency (NTA). The transfer of authority gave way to several changes in the technicalities of the exam. The following changes were introduced into the examination system: 

  • There is a lesser dependency on the class 12 scores: The class 12 scores are essential only for the qualifying round of JEE Main. The class 12 scores are not considered while calculating the merit list and All India Rank. 
  • Aadhar Card: The importance of the Aadhar card has increased. Candidates must possess the Aadhar card during the application and while writing the exam.  

Special Provision Given For Applicants of a Few States 

Candidates from states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu and Kashmir need the following documents to apply for JEE Main 2023:

  • Ration card
  • Bank account number
  • Passport number
  • Selecting cities as their exam centres

JEE Main Exam Pattern & Important Questions

The NTA sets the JEE Main question papers. JEE Main consists of two papers. Students willing to enrol for B. Tech / B.E. should appear for Paper 1, and Paper 2 is for B. Arch and B. Plan. Paper 1 is conducted in 13 languages and is of 400 marks. Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are divided into two sections and have 30 (20 MCQs + 10 Objective type) questions each. Students appear for only five objective questions out of 10 in Section B. The 3 hours written paper includes a negative marking system. Students gain four marks for each correct answer and lose one mark for every incorrect answer.

1. My percentage is less than 75% in my XII standard. Can I appear for JEE Main 2023?

Yes, candidates will be allowed to write JEE Mains. The 75% cutoff is for admission into NIT’s, IIIT’s and other CFTI’s. In JEE Main eligibility criteria for 2021, the 75% cutoff was removed due to the pandemic. In 2023, NTA is yet to announce the decision. 

2. Can diploma students apply for JEE Main?

Yes, diploma students can apply for the JEE Main 2023. According to the JEE Main eligibility criteria, diploma students will be treated on par with the class 12 students. They will not be admitted into the second year of engineering and will have to qualify JEE Advanced to get admission into IIT’s. 

3. Who is eligible for JEE Main 2023?
