Wahida comes from a very small village called Thannamandi, located in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. She completed her schooling at a government school. At that time, higher education for women was quite difficult. So, to continue with her higher studies, they had to shift to her grandmother’s house in Rajouri, where she completed her class 12. She worked hard and became a doctor in the Indian Navy force. She was also the first woman in India to lead a parade.

Lieutenant Commander Wahida was the first woman in India to conduct the Annual Parade. She had to give 36 commands during the parade, and she led four platoons in a very loud and commanding voice. She recollects not being nervous about it as her seniors trained well. She had to practice each morning and evening for a month.

She is one of the 1st women in a navy ship who has worked and led a parade. She had worked extremely hard to complete her MBBS and then decided to join the Forces. The story about Wahida’s struggle to become a doctor is articulated beautifully in our NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 26.

She further said she would like to be a part of the Defence Services as they are a part of the troop that protects our country. The work in the defence services is very respectable. They teach us how to be disciplined, stay alert during any situation, and show the presence of mind in serious situations. The defence forces work hard and boldly to ensure that all of us remain safe and secure.

The role of the doctors in the Navy is not only to give medicine to the patients but also to make sure that everyone on the ship stays healthy and safe. They make sure to do regular medical check-ups of all the sailors and officers. They also have to ensure that cleanliness is maintained; there have to be no rats or garbage on the ships, as they can spread many diseases. They also have to make sure and train everyone on the ship for a medical emergency.

So the story of Wahida, as covered in our NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 26, is very encouraging for girls from smaller towns to aim for bigger goals in their life and work towards achieving their life goals.
