Key Topics Covered In NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 19
Class 4 EVS Chapter 19 depicts the story of Abdul and his garden. It was a holiday for Abdul, and he was helping his Abbu (father) in the garden. Abdul started pulling out the grass, and he felt it was not easy to pull the small grass. His hands turned red by the effort while trying to pull the grass out. Abdul put down a stick holding the pea plant (climber) as the stem of a pea plant was delicate.
It got broken, and his father asked, “Why was he pulling the grass out? The roots of the grass are very strong. You will have to dig them out.” Abdul carefully dug out the plant. He then saw that the grass plant’s roots were longer and much more spread out than the part of the plant above the ground. This is how the concept of roots is introduced to students.
Further in our NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 19, students will study the functions of roots. Roots help in fixing the plant tightly to the soil. Roots help the plant in taking water and minerals from the soil. Most plants usually store food in their roots. We like to eat roots such as radish, carrot and turnip.
The roots of big trees are so tightly fixed in the soil that they support the trees and protect them against heavy winds. At the time of strong winds and heavy rainfall, the leaves and the branches of the trees might fall, but the roots are strong and hold the trees tightly to the ground. When a few roots of the trees get old and they cannot grow back again, they pull out themselves from the ground.
Few roots of the plants grow from the tree’s branches, just like the Banyan tree, as we have seen few roots hanging on in a Banyan tree. They grow and penetrate the ground. They are like pillars and support the tree. The Banyan tree roots are huge, and students can refer to our Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 19 to see pictures of it.
Some plants grow in the walls where there are cracks because some seeds might have got scattered in the soil present between the cracks, and after getting enough water and sunlight, the roots start growing and then develop into plants. It is not safe to grow plants between the cracks because the constant growth of the roots can increase the cracks, which is not safe for the wall.
