How do birds make nests?

It is very exciting to know that they make their nests as warm as our bed. They make their nest with the help of wool, soft stem, roots, grass, cotton wool, hair, etc. The birds keep gazing for these small things and keep gathering them to make a nest. Their nests are a very safe and soft place for them. They save themselves from their enemies like humans, snakes, crows, cats, rats, and squirrels.

  • The Crows make their nests very high on the trees. Their nests are made of a material like wood, wire, etc.
  • Doves make their nest with soft stems, cotton wool etc.
  • Pigeons and sparrows make their nests around our homes.
  • Koel is one more bird, but it looks like a crow, and it has a beautiful soothing voice. Koels are too lazy to make their own nests, so they lay eggs in the crow’s nests, and the crows hatch them along with their own eggs.
  • Coppersmith or Barbet birds make their nests in the hole of a tree.
  • Tailor birds stitch two leaves of a small tree and make a nest. Later they lay eggs in this nest.
  • Sunbirds build their nests like a hanging basket with the help of a branch of a tree. They make a nest using grass, thin twigs, dry leaves, bits of tree bark, and pieces of cloth rags.

It will be beneficial for young children to look at the visual images of bird nests in our Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 16. The photos of different nests will make it easier for children to visualise and understand the various forms of nests built by different birds.

Generally, birds make nests to lay their eggs, hatch them, and raise the chicks. When they learn to fly, they leave the nest. Birds make nests only to lay eggs and hatch them.

What type of feet do birds have?

All different birds have different types of feet. Some birds, like ducks, have tangled feet that help them swim. Like Hawks and eagles, some birds have clawed feet to catch their food. They are also called nails. Birds like woodpeckers have three nails in front and one nail at the back so that it’s easy for them to climb the trees and hold the branches. Birds like ostrich have long feet to walk and run.

What type of beaks do birds have?

Different breeds of birds have different kinds of beaks. Eagles have curved beaks to tear the flesh and peck on woods. Few birds have short beaks to crush seeds. Crows have sharp beaks to cut any food. Few birds have long beaks to find their food from the mud and shallow water.

In this Chapter, the students will further learn and understand many unique features of birds and how they are protective of their little chicks, similar to how our mothers are protective of their kids. By reading this Chapter from Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 16, students will be encouraged and motivated to explore more about birds in their surroundings.
