Key Topics Covered In NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 14 – Basva’s Farm

In this Chapter, Basva states that his father is a farmer, and they live in a village, Belvanika, Karnataka. Every year his father sows the onion crop in the month of July. He also goes to the field to help his father. The Chapter notes are explained in a wonderful way in Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 14. Below, we have given a summary of Basva’s Farm story.

Sowing the Seeds

Basva further said that this year too, his father will sow onion seeds in the field. The bullocks will pull the Kurige, and Appa(father) will walk behind them, scattering the seeds. Basva would also like to do what his father does, but his Appa denies him as he is still very young. Moreover,  it is important to drop the correct amount of seeds at a proper distance, which is not so easy to do.

The Sprouts Appear

It had been twenty days since the seeds were sown in the field. The onion plants had started sprouting. Weeds and had also grown up in fields without being planted. His father said that weeds must be removed as they take up all the water and fertilisers if not removed on time. Hence it was important to remove so that the onion plants could be healthy with proper fertilisers and water.

Growing Plants

Basva was excited to see the plants growing. They were all tall enough to reach his knees. The leaves were changing colour to yellow and drying up. This means that the onions were ready to be plucked.

Everyone at home will have to work together in the field to take the onions out. If not taken out on time, onions will rot on the ground, and all their hard work will be wasted. Therefore it is important to pluck the onions at the right time.

The Onion Crop

Everyone at home was happy. At this time, the onions were big and healthy. His mother and aunt cut the dried leaves from the top of the onions using illige. The illige is a sharp weapon  used to chop the vegetables, and we have to be careful so as to not  cut our fingers. His father and Uncle filled the sacks with onions and loaded them in a truck to sell in the big market.
