Key Topics Covered In NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 17 – Nandita In Mumbai
Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 17 covers the story of Nandita in Mumbai about how a little girl from a village is trying to adjust to a new place.
When Nandita got off the train along with her mother in Mumbai City, she was very scared that she might get lost in the crowded station. Immediately she saw her uncle at the station and got some relief. They had come to Mumbai as Nandita’s mother was not well, and she was asked to be admitted to the hospital for further health treatment.
From the station, they reached her uncle’s home. Her uncle and his family stayed in a slum area in Mumbai; the streets were narrow and crowded, and they had small one-room houses that were dirty in that narrow street. Nandita was astonished to see how her uncle and family lived in one small room. They cooked, washed, ate and slept in the same room. There were no toilets inside the home. The toilets were located at the corner of the street and very dirty. These toilets were used by everyone living on the same street.
Nandita had to wake up at 4 am in the morning to fill water from the street along with her aunt and cousin’s sister. Nandita was shocked to see how people were fighting over water. Nandita compared this new place with her home in the village. Her village home, too, had one room, but the kitchen was separately built. There were people in her village who did not have taps inside their homes, but they used to go out to fill water from the pond and never fought for water like in Mumbai. Nandita’s village home, too, didn’t have a toilet inside the house, but they went to nearby fields.
Nandita started learning new things in Mumbai. She had to travel by bus to see her mother in the hospital. At first, she was frightened to see the buses crowded, but she slowly got used to it. She learned to stand in a queue, she learnt about ticket fares and where to get off. This part of the story has been beautifully represented in our Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 17. Students will find the visual demonstrations given in our solutions very engaging, and they will have fun completing Nandita’s story.
Her aunt used to work in seven houses in one of the huge apartments nearby. One day when she went with her aunt for the first time, Nandita saw huge buildings, and she thought about how she would climb the stairs to the twelfth floor. She was joyful to see the lift in the building that took her to the twelfth floor where her aunt worked. Nandita was astonished to see such a big flat. There were many rooms in the flat. There was a separate kitchen and a separate room for having food. There were bathrooms in the flat and water taps in the bathrooms. Her aunt took some time to clean such a huge flat.
Nandita was excited to see Mumbai city and wanted to go to Chowpati, which she had heard about many times from others. She wanted to see film stars. Students are advised to leverage Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 17 study materials. A beautiful representation of Mumbai city is given to make learning attractive for young students of Class 4.
Those days her uncle was very worried as he had received a notice to vacate the home and stay somewhere else as a huge hotel was supposed to be built there in the slum area. Nandita was worried that if they had to shift to a different part of the city, then her uncle’s office would be very far away, and how would she go to visit her mother in the hospital.
In this Chapter, we come to an understanding of the differences between the houses in the huge apartments and buildings and the houses in slums. People living in small houses do not have many facilities, and travelling in Mumbai is not easy. The hardships of living in Mumbai are discussed at length in Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 17.
