From the station, they reached her uncle’s home. Her uncle and his family stayed in a slum area in Mumbai; the streets were narrow and crowded, and they had small one-room houses that were dirty in that narrow street. Nandita was astonished to see how her uncle and family lived in one small room. They cooked, washed, ate and slept in the same room. There were no toilets inside the home. The toilets were located at the corner of the street and very dirty. These toilets were used by everyone living on the same street. 

Nandita had to wake up at 4 am in the morning to fill water from the street along with her aunt and cousin’s sister. Nandita was shocked to see how people were fighting over water. Nandita compared this new place with her home in the village. Her village home, too, had one room, but the kitchen was separately built. There were people in her village who did not have taps inside their homes, but they used to go out to fill water from the pond and never fought for water like in Mumbai. Nandita’s village home, too, didn’t have a toilet inside the house, but they went to nearby fields. 

Nandita started learning new things in Mumbai. She had to travel by bus to see her mother in the hospital. At first, she was frightened to see the buses crowded, but she slowly got used to it. She learned to stand in a queue, she learnt about ticket fares and where to get off.
