Key Topics Covered In NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 18

In Chapter 18 of Class 4 EVS, we learn about clean water shortages in Nallamada in Andhra Pradesh. People do not get clean and pure water to drink there, and they are used to drinking contaminated water. Once, when a guest from a city visited Shaguna’s home, her father offered cold drinks to guests instead of water because the water was not clean.

Anybody can fall sick if the water is not clean for drinking. Shaguna and her family have to take all necessary steps to drink clean and pure water. How do we make water clean for drinking? We can drink the water by filtering it. If we do not have a water filter, we need to boil the water for 10 minutes to kill the germs before drinking. After the water is cool, we are safe to drink this water.

The story further takes place in Maharashtra and Mumbai as described in Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 18. In a place called Bazaar Gaon in Maharashtra, there is a big water park, and there are a lot of riders in the park that kids enjoy. Rohan had been to the water park along with his parents. He was excited to see water fountains and water rides. He enjoyed his rides, but when he heard some disturbance outside the park’s gate. He noticed a few women wanted to fill some water from the park because there was no water in the wells as they had completely dried up, and the tanker also did not come to provide them water.

There was a water shortage in their colony; hence they wanted water from the park. It is very sad to see how we use water in the parks for our selfish needs,  however, water is scarce in other corners of the city. Life without water comes to a complete stop. There is an important lesson that this part of the story teaches us. This message for children is clearly articulated in Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 18 that we have to decide what is important to us, the entertainment or people’s basic needs.

In Mumbai, at one of the Cuffe Parade apartments, Pushpa and her son Deepak went to Razia’shome to work. While reading a newspaper, Razia said to Pushpa that an article in the newspaper said the drinking water pipes got mixed with gutter water. Razia asked Pushpa to throw all the water that was filled yesterday and informed her to refill the fresh water and boil it; she also told Pushpa to carry some water for herself as the dirty water can cause diarrhoea and vomiting.

The second part of NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 18 talks about a village called Holgundi, located in Karnataka, where people were facing a shortage of water. The wells were dried up due to no rains. People were moving out of the village to different places; This was a concern to the Panchayat.

The Panchayat decided to meet the children’s Panchayat, Bhima Sangha. The seniors in the village said that there was one well located on top of the hill, but that had also dried up. The children went to see them well and saw it was filled with mud and stones, and it also had a few cracks. Children cleaned the well and also repaired the cracks. They planted trees and plants near the well. When there was the first rain, the well got filled with water. Slowly, that place started getting green over the years, and the well was filled with water. Since then, the villagers have never faced any shortage of water.
