ICSE Syllabus Class 9 Modern Foreign Language Group 1: Group 1 A
The question paper will be created in Spanish (36), French (27), German (28) and other modern foreign languages if and when required.
- The entire exam will be of three hours duration and consist of 80 marks. And the remaining 20 marks are for the internal assessment.
- The paper will be divided into two sections: Section A for 40 marks and Section B for 40 marks.
Section A (40 marks)
Students are to attempt three questions, which will go like this:
- Question 1: Candidates must write one brief composition in the language, which may include brief explanations, descriptions, narratives, or directions. The subjects available will be diverse and might be suggested by language or other stimuli like images or objects.
- Question 2: Candidates must compose a letter on one of two topics. There may be suggestions made. The letter’s format will be evaluated, including the address, opening paragraph, body, and conclusion.
- Question 3: This will include tests on vocabulary, syntax, and idiom, as well as examples, synthesis in sentence construction, and question types that do not need an understanding of grammatical concepts.
Section B (40 marks)
The following questions will be provided in the exam:
- A 150-word unseen passage will be provided in the language. To evaluate the candidate’s comprehension of the passage’s content, questions in the language will be asked and answered in that language.
- There will be one brief passage that has to be translated from the language into English.
- A single passage will be translated into the language from English.
Internal Assessment (20 Marks)
Two to three tasks will be given to students with a particular length or duration of time. Out of which, two tasks will be in the form of written assignments.

On request, the exam questions will be given in modern foreign languages. The scoring criteria will be the same for all modern foreign languages. The scope of the syllabus for the grammar section has been precisely determined for the languages of French (27), German (28) and Spanish (36).

- Letter: Candidates must compose a letter of one of two types—a formal letter or an informal one. There may be suggestions made. The letter’s format will be evaluated, including the address, opening paragraph, body, and conclusion.
- Comprehension: A 150-word unseen passage will be provided in the language. The questions based on the provided passage will be set up to be answered in the language to evaluate the student’s understanding of the passage’s content.
- Grammar: This will include exams in vocabulary, syntax, and idiom, such as sentence synthesis and the creation of phrases that accurately include specified words or structures. No in-depth understanding of grammatical definitions will be necessary to answer the question.
- Translation or/and Dialogue Writing:
- There will be one brief passage that has to be translated from the language into English.
- One text from English in the target language will be assigned.
- Writing dialogue (around 150 words) based on real-world scenarios.
